Behind the Quiet: Bastrop South End District Update
TO OUR SOUTH END DISTRICT FAMILY
It has been a minute, and I want to make sure you hear directly from me about where things stand. First, thank you. Your early energy, your ideas, and your willingness to show up when this was still just a vision meant everything. That foundation is what we are building on right now. The South End District is moving. Not talking-about-it moving. Actually moving.
HERE IS WHERE WE ARE TODAY:
We are currently in active coordination with TxDOT on the Cultural Gateway mural project at the SH 71 underpasses. This is the corridor work you heard about at the Juneteenth Banquet. Getting TxDOT to the table is a critical step, and we are in that process now.
At the same time, we are in serious conversations about consolidating our community's organizational strength. The vision on the table is to bring Juneteenth, the Bastrop County African American Cultural Center and Freedom Colonies Museum, the Kerr Center, and the Emile School Committee into alignment under the South End District umbrella. Not to dissolve what any of these organizations are but to give all of us shared infrastructure, shared voice, and shared opportunity. I just believe together we are stronger than we are separately. That work is underway.
On the governance and funding side, we are laying the legal and structural groundwork, 501(c)(3) formation, HOT fund positioning, and the formal district framework, so that when this comes together, it comes together right.
It can feel quiet on your end when the work is happening behind the scenes. Just know: the quiet is productive. We are setting the table.
And when all the pieces are in place and they are coming together, there will be real work to do and real roles to fill. Community outreach. Cultural programming. Heritage documentation. Event coordination. Mural project support. Oral history. Youth engagement. Economic development. The South End District will need every talented, committed person who believed in this early. Your seat at this table is not lost. It is waiting.
